My heavy metal band PIGS loves your site and decided our next move should be a Japan tour. I’ve only been to Japan once, and it had a profound effect on me as an exciting and confusing place. It will most likely end up as a brief “Spring Break” jaunt as the backing section spends their time with music at Laney Community College. Recess Records may have some tour “circuits” we could tag along on, but still need to develop some sort of a fan base outside of the half dozen people I know there…any suggestions?
please refer to to confirm that we are a serious punk/metal band.
Thank you for your consideration and keep up the great gaijin journalism, it is relevent to my interests!

@jack: touring japan? the only way that japan tours ever happen (that i’ve ever heard of) is this:
    1) be an american band with a reputation for nationwide tours.
    2) find a japanese band (who are big enough that they sometimes tour japan) who WANTS to tour america.
    3) offer to take the japanese band on tour with you in america.
    4) pray that the japanese band feels honor-bound to invite YOUR band on THEIR next japan tour.

you’d think that the ‘underground scene’ would be less full of red-tape than the ‘official’ immigrations-customs nightmare, but it is not so.

    Hi Schulz,

I’m sure you probably don’t remember me, but I met you briefly at the ‘Golden World Punk Week’ show at Earthdom in 2007 ( I was the drunk kid who said I liked your blog, and then I think I tried to hit on your friend, who was definitely not impressed. sorry.) Anyway, I’m now in school at a tiny place called Earlham in the midwest, majoring in Japanese Studies, and I’m writing my thesis on social deviance and subculture in Japan. I was wondering if you’d be willing to let me ‘interview’ you, or do some kind of Q&A thing via e-mail Re: the underground music scene and its relationship with the rest of Japanese society. It’d be a huge help to me, as there aren’t an awful lot of ‘scholarly’ resources on punk and metal in Japan, and I think you’ve got more experience with and insight on this topic than just about anybody. I’d be eternally grateful if you could help me out. Thanks!

  13. Jonny July 13th, 2011 4:39 am

Hey, you probably get this all the time, but you seem like a really cool guy. This website is totally helpful for a fellow punk/anarchist/cultural enthusiast. My dream and goal is to live in Japan and learn Japanese. I'm pretty fluent right now, I just need to find a way to live in Japan and eventually play in a post-punk and/or noise band and live in Tokyo.

How do you live in Japan? What is your job? How did you get your job? Do you know anybody hiring? haha Seriously, though, do you have any advice for someone like me?

I hope we can stay in touch. I hope to meet you someday in Tokyo!

Just wanted to say that this is a great website, I like your drawings, and keep up the good work.

    Have a great day, man.

    Hi Schulz,
found tdr through your contributions on ruthlessreviews ages ago. Japanese culture, humour, punk/HC, crust, undergound metal, drone/doom. AWESOME. Since you get to meet crazy nihon-jin people everyday I was wondering about something. I was wondering if you knew some WEALTHY JAPANESE person who would help some guy who's in DEEP trouble with criminals. I am facing impending life threats. If you cannot help forget what I just said. I'm so sorry to tell you this. But it is the awful truth. Am in PAIN and MISERY. I'm desperate. Please, anybody. If you could help. I am so afraid. It's a living hell.
I wish these were just stupid jokes or I would wake up from some horrible nightmare. Schulz, your reports and awesome humour has brightened my days for so many years, I don't know how to thank you for all this.

@bloke: jesus, I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t know any rich japanese. You might want to contact jake adelstein at “japan subculture” blog – he’s a journalist that covers organized crime and he knows a lot about what to do.

  16. ALEX February 14th, 2012 5:48 am

Hey Schulz, This is my 3rd time to Japan and I've always caught a bunch of sick punk shows. I'm having trouble finding between  Feb16-23. Are you aware of anything cool going on I should check out? Your site rules I check off new things on the tour guide every visit.

  17. admin February 15th, 2012 5:27 pm

Thank you for all the great info and fun on this blog and page – I am now reading your guide to Tokyo.

I’m going to be in Tokyo in a week and wanted to catch some local punk/hardcore bands. Any recommendations of where I should go?

Thanks for al the cool stuff.
